What on earth is SEO?

Recently, Whitsunday businesses seem to have become more aware of their need for an effective Internet strategy... and by strategy I mean more than a funky looking web site. Too often during my career I have been engaged to produce a web site only to find the job conclude once the site is online,  the client expectation that they have now done enough to be successful.

These days the majority of the work we do at eCentral is via a continuing contract, to take action with the client's Internet strategy month in and month out. A cornerstone of this is SEO, or "Search Engine Optimisation". Loosely, this is effort made to promote a web site to appear on the first page, or even better first position of the search engines for desirable "key word phrases" related to the business. To have prominent position will result in web site traffic and a profitable business result.

For instance a farm that would like to sell its organic Tomatoes to local restaurants in the Whitsundays would like to be found on the first page of Google for phrases like:
  "Airlie Beach Tomatoes"
  "Local produce Whitsundays"
  "Organic restaurant supplies"

These are just three examples from a long list that is relevant. The list automatically includes their company name and brands they market under. That list is then studied to find the most popular variations as a first step in this strategy.

From there the task becomes more difficult, particularly in competitive market places. There are some best practise skills aided by some late night sorcery as you pursue first page results on the favoured phrases.

The black magic does not end with Google searches either. Google Maps, Google Earth, Youtube and some other important indexes are part of a hierarchy of places to pursue the ever-elusive online client.
