A prime issue facing mobile business is collecting payments efficiently. Cash, direct deposit, credit cards and PayPal are pretty much essential to meet customer expectations. Credit card acceptance is something that I did via a Bank merchant facility and the excessive $22 monthly fee never ever delivered a ROI. Probably $1500 in fees over time for credit card payments totalling just a little more than this. Why did I even bother??? I should have just given the clients the product for free and saved all the hassle and money paid to bank! Feel the pain in my words? I am sure that I am one of many left a little raw for their experience.
Lucky the plethora of ways that we use smartphones has expanded to include using yours as a credit card processing terminal ... and for this I have chosen "Square".
Making the decision was pretty easy. Square promises a simple download and install from AppStore ( iPhone) or Play Store (Android). If you use this link
Set up seems almost too easy. Some information about your business, destination bank account and you are on your way to being a verified Square user.
Verification done you are ready to receive your first payment... Punch in the amount remembering to enter the cents and push the friendly Blue button. Then choose "Credit Card" from the options and you are already being prompted for card number, expiry and CVV.
If the customer is present, they even get to sign the screen when prompted, so you have it fully auth'd.
Moments later your client is impressed with your savvy and top it off by texting or emailing the receipt to them.
1-2 days later and the money is in your bank account.
Take it to the next level of simplicity and impress with a trip to Officeworks to pick up a "Square reader".... Unsurprisingly it's square :-) It's battery powered, USB charged and connects to your phone via Bluetooth. NOW YOU HAVE PAYWAVE IN YOUR POCKET - wow!
Recently, I was dropping off something to a client and while the client was enjoying the euphoria of a job well done, I went into the coat pocket for my Square Reader and did the quick draw. The customer was already part the way into the "How do I pay?" question and I keyed the price into the Square app and prompted him to touch down on the Reader to directly have the payment on its way to my bank account. So simple.
Debtors - gone.
Worrying that clients will miss key my bank account - gone.
Saddled with too much cash under the mattress - gone. :-)
Impressed happy clients - aplenty.
There is plenty more to know about Square, but the other most important thing is the merchant rates (at the time of writing):
Tap, insert or swiped cards : 1.9%
Keyed-In Transactions (and others) : 2.2%
