The value of truly listening - Greg Pritchard on the eCentral Business Show

When you actively listen to other people, then you can better understand what they are saying. If you fail to listen in a conversation, then that discussion may begin to feel one-sided. To ensure the conversation feels balanced and you create connections, you must truly listen to the other person. However, if you feel a conversation is not benefiting you, you must feel confident in ending that conversation.

Some discussions can feel one-sided, but people become excited about conversations that create two-way connections. If you fail to engage with your conversational partner, then your discussion will seem shallow. This can manifest as a failure to listen as well as a failure to respond. To create a meaningful connection, you must truly listen, and understand what is being said to you.

Connections are created when you switch off your inner voice while you are being spoken to. It is easy to think about what you are going to say once a person is done talking. But if you are thinking about what you are going to say next, then you are not truly listening to what is being said now. If you want to really understand what you are being told, then you must stop thinking about any distractions, and focus entirely on the conversation. As this requires an intense level of concentration, it is best to finish a conversation as soon as it is no longer benefiting you.

If you feel a conversation can not possibly benefit you or create a meaningful connection, then you should end that conversation. We converse for results, and in business, people feel a need to connect. If a conversation fails to create that connection, then it is of no benefit to you. As such, you should be respectful of everyone's time and finish the conversation as you see fit.

As explained by Greg Pritchard from LeadnEdge Consulting, truly listening has a range of benefits. These benefits can manifest in various ways, though the act of truly listening can be challenging, at times.
