If you're not fully aware, your water systems might be at risk of Legionella. Andrew and Jon from Compliance Water Services sit down and goes through a list of some of the areas where there is a real risk of growing Legionella.
Cooling Towers
When not maintained properly, cooling towers can be at risk of growing Legionella. As a matter of fact, the recent Legionella break out was attributed to under-maintained cooling towers. There are even instances where one cooling tower can cross-contaminate with another cooling tower and that exposes more people to Legionella.
Water Storage Units
The water storage units that are on top of buildings are also at risk of growing Legionella. The heat that water storage units are exposed to, especially those that are on top of buildings in Brisbane, greatly encourage the growth of Legionella.
Dead Leg Piping
This refers to the piping sections that are cut-off, or ones that are rarely used. The stagnant state of the water can put it at risk of growing Legionella, and when it backs up, it could contaminate the system.
Hot Tubs
The ultimate symbol of a chill aquatic hangout, the hot tub can also be at risk of growing Legionella. The temperature of the hot tub encourage Legionella growth, and as soon as the tub sizzles, the Legionella-containing aerosol can be inhaled, and it can be the cause for Legionnaire's Disease.
Warm Water Systems or Hot Showers
Aged care facilities and hospitals often put on warm water systems so their patients or clients won't get cold when taking a bath. The temperature may make it seem nice for the elderly to refresh themselves, but under-maintained warm water systems may cause Legionella growth and can be dangerous to elderly individuals.
A good way to get rid of the risk of Legionella is to keep the water system active, and keep a maintenance schedule for water systems. Even flushing can do great things for your water systems at it resets the system and brings chlorine back in to kill the Legionella that is looking to thrive in your water systems.
